Salisbury Steak with Rich Onion Gravy

Introduction
This dish is a classic, comforting American-style meal made of seasoned beef patties browned until crisp, then simmered in a deep, savory onion gravy. It’s hearty, budget-friendly, and perfect for family dinners. The picture you shared looks exactly like traditional Salisbury steak — caramelized, juicy patties bathing in thick brown gravy.

Ingredients

For the Steaks

  • 1 kg ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tbsp oil (for frying)

For the Onion Gravy

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 large onion, sliced thin
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (optional for deeper flavor)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Beef Patties
Mix ground beef, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, eggs, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, pepper, salt, thyme, paprika, and milk in a large bowl. Combine well but don’t over-mix to keep the patties tender. Shape into 6 large oval patties.

2. Brown the Patties
Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add patties and brown 4–5 minutes per side. They don’t need to be fully cooked—just browned. Remove and set aside.

3. Make the Onion Gravy
In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and cook until soft and golden, about 8–10 minutes.
Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1 minute.
Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps.
Add Worcestershire, soy sauce, garlic powder, pepper, and a little salt.
Simmer 3–4 minutes until thickened.

4. Simmer the Patties in Gravy
Return browned beef patties to the skillet. Spoon gravy over the tops.
Cover and simmer on low heat for 20–25 minutes until the patties are fully cooked and the gravy is rich and thick.

5. Serve
Garnish with parsley. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.

Tips for Best Results

  • Browning patties first adds deep flavor.
  • If gravy gets too thick, add a splash of broth.
  • If too thin, simmer uncovered until it reduces.
