Crispy Fried Cheese Bites

Ingredients:

  • 800 g (about 2 blocks) semi-hard cheese (Halloumi, Mozzarella, Kefalotyri, or even a firm white cheese)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (or fine semolina for extra crunch)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • Fresh parsley or oregano, chopped (for garnish)
  • Olive oil or vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cheese
  • Cut the cheese into thick rectangles or squares (about 2–3 cm thick).
  • Pat dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture (important for crispiness).
  1. Breading Station
  • Place flour in one bowl.
  • Beaten eggs in another.
  • Mix breadcrumbs, oregano, thyme, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder in a third bowl.
  1. Coat the Cheese
  • Dredge each cheese piece in flour (shake off excess).
  • Dip in beaten egg.
  • Roll in breadcrumb mixture until fully coated.
  • For extra crunch: repeat egg + breadcrumb coating once more.
  1. Fry
  • Heat ½ cup oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat.
  • Place cheese bites in hot oil and cook 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove and drain on paper towels.
  1. Serve
  • Sprinkle with fresh herbs.
  • Serve hot with honey drizzle, marinara, or garlic dip.

  • Use Halloumi or Kefalotyri for a traditional Greek flavor.
  • Use mozzarella for extra gooey bites.
  • Add chili flakes to breadcrumbs for a spicy kick.
  • Can also be baked at 200°C (400°F) for 20 minutes, flipping halfway.
